DeepSpace is an ongoing project from Stefan Preyer and Theodore Otis Flach that explores the physical, emotional and sculptural dimensions of sound. It centres on the physically tangible effect of acoustic and electro-acoustic sound sources and their transformation in space through technical and performative interventions. Both works combine improvisational practice with compositional structure, technical research with sound-artistic intuition and invite the audience to an immersive, movement-based experience.
Projects:
DEEPSPACEDOME
At its core lies the double bass, not merely as an instrument, but as a source of vibration and transformation. Low frequencies, floating overtones, and minimalist patterns create a sonic landscape that is not only heard but physically felt.
Through alternate tunings and extended techniques, the double bass expands beyond its traditional role – becoming an exciter that sets space itself into motion. Sounds emerge, intertwine, dissolve. The music unfolds in real time: improvised, alive.
Deep Space Dome asks: What does a space sound like when it’s not defined by sound alone, but by vibration? How can we build sonic environments that we don’t just hear, but experience with our entire bodies – through subwoofers, exciters, skin, and space?
GRAINS
The finest sonic details are made audible through prepared techniques, sensitive miking and real-time processing - overtones, textures and resonances that remain hidden in normal playing.
From minimal acoustic impulses - a single grain of sound - a multi-layered, growing cosmos of sound is created through improvisation and live-controlled transformation. The aim is to make it possible to experience the boundaries between hearing a single sound and perceiving a complex soundscape.
The piece is realised using a multi-channel setup with 6 to 12 loudspeakers, which are arranged in a circle or as a distributed "forest of loudspeakers" in the room. The listeners move freely around the room or linger while the sound perspectives change continuously.
The performance space is incorporated into the sound event as a resonating body, so that space, sound and physical perception are combined.
GRAINS is a further development of my previous work Deep Space Dome. While the physical effect of low frequencies was in the foreground there, the focus is now on the microscopic unfolding and condensation of sound.
The work creates an immersive sound environment that invites you to experience the nuances as well as the more complex structures of a living sound organism.
